Doctrine matters

(Thanks to the team at Southeast for the stock footage!)

I counseled with a lady the other day who was wrestling with some deep spiritual issues. It didn’t take long to discover the root of her problems stemmed from bad doctrine. I wonder how many of us are affected by bad doctrine? Some see God as this mean kid tormenting them to see how much they can take. Others see God as the absent being who doesn’t practically care. Still others somehow believe that if they just pray enough they can pay off the vending machine deity and God will dispense whatever they want. I think Mark Driscoll is so accurate when he says, “Deep longings pervade the human heart. We long for selfless, trustworthy, unending love from someone we can trust to be faithful and helpful.” I also believe that the designer of the universe knows how to fill our deepest longings. Accurate doctrine saves us, literally saves us, not just from the devastation of bad doctrine but to the majesty of a purposeful and meaningful life! We are in a series that holds huge implications. We want people to not just find freedom from the chains of bondage, but find the road to abundant life.

1 Timothy 4:16
Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers.
