I offer two ways to help in the fight against temptation!
- A tactical battle plan.
- A video teaching below to help understand temptation and the human condition.
The Battle Plan:
“We human beings are a mystery to ourselves. We are rational and irrational, civilized and savage, capable of deep friendship and murderous hostility, free and in bondage, the pinnacle of creation and its greatest danger. We are Rembrandt and Hitler, Mozart and Stalin, Antigone and Lady Macbeth, Ruth and Jezebel. ‘What a work of art,’ says Shakespeare of humanity. ‘We are very dangerous,’ says Arthur Miller in After the Fall.” (Migliore 2004)
All it takes is one newspaper to see that humanity has a problem. Sin is prevalent and its allure can tempt even the most righteous of people.
So how do we personally fight against the enticement of sin?
I have put together over the years a tactical plan based on literature from Piper, Stoeker, Yorkey, Luther, and a few other theologians and authors.
Temptation is a BRAT!
Bounce-The eyes from something you shouldn’t look at, a thought that wants to depress you, a location that tends to ensnare you, or even a conversation with someone who draws you down.
Re-orientate– Toward Scripture and a Godly person. Don’t just look away from sin, look to what is right and Godly. Immerse your heart and mind in these verses and usher in the nature of Jesus!
-Galatians 5:22-23 (ESV) 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
-Philippians 4:8 (ESV) 8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
Admit– Share the struggle with God in prayer and a safe Godly person who can pray with you. (learn more about accountability by clicking here)
Transform– Change your way of living. Limit or possibly even end a relationship, get a web filter, or stop consuming that form of entertainment that draws you away from God. Make life changes.
